- Is there a suspect in prostitute deaths? Prosecutor is coy
By FRANK ELTMAN, Associated Press - Saturday Sep 16, 2017
MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) — For years, the thicket along a beach highway on Long Island held a horrible secret. Hidden from passing drivers were the skeletal remains of 10 people, mostly young women who had worked as prostitutes. Who killed them, and why, is a mystery that has vexed a slew of seasoned homicide detectives. The case took an intriguing turn when a veteran county prosecutor became the first authority to publicly name a suspect in at least one of the deaths: John Bittrolff, a Long Island carpenter who was sentenced to consecutive 25 years-to-life terms in prison this week for beating two prostitutes to death in 1993 and 1994.

- Carpenter ‘Meets World’ on her way to the top
By Brandon Yu - Thursday Jul 13, 2017
For someone who has grown up in the spotlight and just performed for an entire stadium of fans, Sabrina Carpenter sounds surprisingly grounded as she calls from Los Angeles, less than a day after returning from Brazil, where she opened two shows for Ariana Grande. The 18-year-old rising pop singer and actress from “Girl Meets World” (a spin-off from the popular 1990s sitcom “Boy Meets World”) is on her second headlining tour, “The De-Tour,” which will include a stop at the San Francisco Masonic Auditorium on Saturday, July 15.“De-Tour” comes immediately on the heels of her first sold-out tour throughout North America and Europe — an appropriately tireless move for Carpenter during the critical transition period from child star into adult songstress.“I think if I’ve ever been in an interim period, it is right now,” Carpenter says, her voice surprisingly deeper and more mature than her pop songs suggest.“Girl Meets World,” from which most fans recognize Carpenter, was recently canceled after three seasons on the Disney Channel, but Carpenter has been busy climbing her way into bigger pop stardom. From there came YouTube song covers, a record label signing at 12, her first EP at age 14 and a starring role on “Girl Meets World.”[...] 18, with the sitcom and two full-length albums (“Eyes Wide Open,” “Evolution”) behind her, Carpenter is poised for growth, an often uneasy path at her age and one she seems to tread with self-awareness.Carpenter still maintains a dedication to her huge young fan base — she consistently works with the Ryan Seacrest Foundation, touring children’s hospitals for visits and live music sessions.[...] with her third album in the works, she appears conscious of artistic progression.Carpenter’s brief stint on Grande’s “Dangerous Woman” tour was a learning experience, she says, especially Grande’s resolve amid the deadly Manchester bombing attack in May.
