  • 20-acre brushfire engulfs 2 homes in San Jose hills

    A swiftly moving brushfire engulfed two large homes in the northeast San Jose hills Tuesday, and an army of state and local firefighters was fighting to contain the flames before they spread to more populated areas below.The fire broke out around Lariat Lane and Claitor Way just before 5 p.m. and quickly spread to 20 acres, said Capt. Amy Head of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.Crews were fighting the fire with the help of four air tankers and two helicopters, but under temperatures of about 90 degrees the flames leaped to the houses before the battalions could stop their advance, officials said.

  • 2 arrested in killing of San Jose teen in Santa Clara

    Two men were arrested in connection with the killing last week of a San Jose teenager in Santa Clara, police said Monday.Following what they believed to be the sound of fireworks, police officers found 17-year-old Alexis Cardenas Gutierrez suffering from a gunshot wound in a crashed car about 10:44 p.m. on July 5 near Brookdale and Bing drives, said the Santa Clara Police Department.According to officials, detectives tracked two suspects, 25-year-old Giovanny Ortiz of San Jose and 18-year-old Eric James Carter of Santa Clara, to a motel in Modesto, taking them into custody with the help of Modesto officers.Both men were booked into Santa Clara County jail on suspicion of murder and were being held without bail in advance of a scheduled court appearance on Tuesday.

  • San Jose signs Vlasic, Jones; Thornton reportedly returning

    The Sharks opened free agency Saturday by reaching long-term deals with two players that will keep them off the open market next summer.The Sharks signed shutdown defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic to a $56 million, eight-year contract and goalie Martin Jones to a $34.5 million, six-year deal.The Sharks did not reach a deal with longtime stalwart Patrick Marleau before he hit the open market.The Sharks also have key forwards Joe Pavelski and Logan Couture under contract for two more seasons and several young players they hope will develop in the next few years.Vlasic, 30, was a second-round pick by San Jose in 2005 and became a presence on the blue line the following year.Vlasic has played 812 games over 11 seasons and is usually tasked with shutting down the opponent’s top scorers.“Marc-Edouard is one of the most respected players in the league, certainly one of the best defenseman,” Wilson said.The 27-year-old Jones has been a rock in goal since being acquired in a trade with Boston two years ago that included a first-round draft pick for a player who had never been a consistent starter in the NHL.Jones backed up San Jose’s belief in him and helped the team reach the Stanley Cup Finals in 2016 and the playoffs this past season.Jones leads the NHL with 130 games started the past two seasons and is tied for second with 72 wins.

  • Suspect nabbed in slaying of 63-year-old man in San Jose

    A suspect in the killing of a 63-year-old man in a San Jose home in June was arrested, police said Thursday. The suspect, Rael Andal, 30, was tracked down by police in San Jose on June 29, about a week and a half after Leonard Daguro was found dead in a home on the 2200 block of Denair Avenue, police said. Andal was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail in San Jose on suspicion of homicide, police said.
