  • Brutal Southwest U.S. heat wave sends temperature soaring to 125 degrees
By Andrew Freedman - Wednesday Jun 21, 2017

There is little that's normal about the heat wave roasting the Southwest U.S. during the past several days. In Phoenix and Palm Springs, temperatures were so high that 43 flights on American Eagle's regional jets were canceled on Tuesday afternoon because the heat exceeded aircraft operating limits.

So far, slightly lower temperatures are expected on Wednesday, and there were no heat-related delays or cancelations as of Wednesday morning, American Airlines said in an email.

The reason for the flight cancelations is that the heat plus the relatively high altitudes in the Southwest caused the air to be so thin that it was impossible for small jets' wings to generate enough lift to become safely airborne. Since Sunday, more than 100 flights were canceled due to the heat, according to American Airlines and news reports. Read more...

  • A record-smashing heat wave will scorch the southwestern U.S.
By Maria Gallucci - Sunday Jun 18, 2017

A brutal heat wave is expected to scorch the southwestern U.S. this week, with some cities likely to see all-time record high temperatures.

The National Weather Service (NWS) said this will likely be one of the most intense heat waves seen in many years across desert Southwest, including parts of California, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah.

High temperatures could climb well above 110 degrees each day for the next week across the area. Many desert locations, including Tucson and Phoenix, could reach the 120-degrees Fahrenheit mark on Tuesday or Wednesday, followed by a slow decline in temperatures in days to come. Read more...

  • Men can't wear shorts to work, so they're wearing skirts
By Samantha Scelzo - Thursday Jun 22, 2017

Men across Europe are complaining about what they see as unfair dress codes.

With temperatures reaching record highs in the French city of Nantes, bus drivers of the CFDT Semitan union showed up to work wearing skirts, as they are not allowed to wear shorts despite the hot conditions.

According to the International Business Times, the drivers called the shorts ban "absurd," and pointed out that female drivers are allowed to wear skirts, but men are not allowed to wear shorts.

"Our uniform is not appropriate for these high temperatures. We envy women at moments like this,” Didier Sauvetre, a driver from the CFDT union, told the local Presse Ocean news site. Read more...
