- “Free” airport parking, cheap rentals back at SFO, LAX
By Chris McGinnis - Friday Jul 28, 2017
TravelCar will rent your car to another traveler while you’re away. (Image: TravelCar) Remember FlightCar? It was a San Francisco-based start-up that solicited air travelers to rent out their cars from the airport while they were out of town, giving them free parking and a share of the rental revenue. It had 12 airport locations (and several fans among TravelSkills readers) before it went out of business last year. Another company called RelayRides is out of the airport business, but still working in the car sharing/renting space as Turo.com CONNECT WITH CHRISChris McGinnis is a travel blogger and editor of TravelSkills.com. - TravelCar offers flier-to-flier airport rentals at SFO, LAX

If that premise sounds familiar, that’s because it was the pitch for FlightCar, a San Francisco startup that abruptly shut down a year ago after burning through some $40 million in venture backing and setting up operations at 12 U.S. airports. [...] a French company called TravelCar is launching very similar peer-to-peer rental service — a self-styled “Airbnb for cars” — in the United States. “Our mission is to help travelers spend less and eliminate the useless waste of vehicles” sitting in long-term parking, said TravelCar CEO and founder Ahmed Mhiri. Many locations generate enough revenues to cover operating costs; the company as a whole expects profitability in 2019. April Rinne, an independent advisor specializing in new business models, said she thinks peer-to-peer airport rentals are a viable business model, but the main barriers to U.S. entry will be psychological. Two other companies that let people rent their cars to strangers, Turo and Getaround, pitch their peer-to-peer rentals as a way to generate extra income. [...] TravelCar offers cheap parking as a way to expose its brand to potential customers. TravelCar charges around $30 a day for travelers who rent other people’s cars; renters are responsible for refueling it. TravelCar recently raised $20 million from European investors including French car maker Groupe PSA to fuel its U.S. expansion.
