- Nine hospitalized in crash near Brentwood
By Filipa Ioannou - Sunday Jul 16, 2017
Nine people — including a 72-year-old woman and a 1-year-old child — were hospitalized after a stolen car crashed head-on into a van while driving the wrong way on Highway 4 in Brentwood, the California Highway Patrol said. The car passed multiple other vehicles and finally crashed into a westbound 2015 Honda Odyssey van carrying seven people at Sand Creek Road, the CHP said.A 22-year-old passenger riding in the Accord sustained major injuries and was taken to Eden Hospital in Dublin but has since stabilized, CHP reported. The driver of the Accord, 24-year-old Rafael Duarte of Oakley, received treatment for minor injuries at John Muir Walnut Creek, then was booked into Martinez Detention Facility on suspicion of felony drunken driving, possession of a stolen vehicle, driving without a license, driving without insurance, and driving the wrong way on the highway, causing injury.
- Firefighters battle East Bay brush fires
By Sarah Ravani - Saturday Jul 8, 2017
Firefighters were battling three blazes in Brentwood on Saturday that had caused temporary evacuations of about 50 homes, fire officials said. The evacuation orders were lifted at 10:15 a.m. when the fires were at 225 acres and 60 percent contained, said Jim Crawford, a division chief for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The blazes were reported at 2:20 a.m. off Deer Valley and Marsh Creek roads west of Brentwood, said Crawford. Sarah Ravani is a San Francisco Chronicle staff writer. - Brentwood’s Paul Blackburn has strong debut for A’s
By Susan Slusser - Saturday Jul 1, 2017
Blackburn hung right in there with Dickey, allowing just one unearned run in six innings in the A’s 4-3 loss to the Braves.Khris Davis clobbered his 22nd homer, a two-run shot, to tie the game in the eighth, but the Braves scored an unearned run against Santiago Casilla in the ninth for their second win in a row in Oakland. In the second inning, Tyler Flowers reached on an error by shortstop Franklin Barreto and scored on Danny Santana’s one-out double.Oakland’s run off Dickey came in the fourth, when Davis walked, Yonder Alonso reached on an infield single and Ryon Healy knocked an RBI single up the middle.Healy had three hits but had a rough day physically, fouling a pitch off his left foot in the sixth inning, then having Santana bang the same foot sliding into third the next inning. The rookie fared so well in an on-field workout Friday he was sent on a rehab assignment with Class-A Stockton a day early and was scheduled to DH for the Ports on Saturday evening.Matt Olson probably will be demoted to make room for Chapman, albeit briefly; Olson has impressed in this most recent stint with the club and he’d remain on the roster if the team had the leeway to designate Rajai Davis for assignment, but Davis is the A’s lone backup center fielder.Marcus Semien, who could be back in less than a week from April wrist surgery, was at shortstop for Nashville on Saturday.
- Bay Area throwers spin dreams come true at state meet
By Mitch Stephens - Tuesday Jun 6, 2017
Bay Area throwers spin dreams come true at state meetAfter similar late clutch efforts Saturday at Buchanan High in Clovis (Fresno County), each can be called something else: 2017 state champion.Amaechi (shot put) and Joyner (discus) became the first Bay Area female and male to win throwing events at the same state meet.“This is all so fantastic,” said Amaechi, who was holding her medal and the name placard given to field-event winners as the meet-ending fireworks show exploded above her.Joyner was seeded sixth in the discus heading into the meet and was eighth after Friday’s trials, but on his second-to-last effort Saturday he passed everyone with a throw of 203-8 — his first of more than 200 feet — to edge Oak Park senior Robbie Otai (202).Joyner, who later placed fifth in the shot put at 59-9, became the 17th Metro discus champion, the first since 2003 and only the second Pittsburg male to win the event.Junior Jett Charvet (800 meters, 1:51.07) is the first Heritage-Brentwood athlete to win a state title in any sport and the first Bay Area boys champ in that event since Mission San Jose’s Jon Stevens in 1998. …MaxPreps senior writer Mitch Stephens covers high school sports for The Chronicle
- At least a dozen arrested in MS-13 gang killings
By FRANK ELTMAN, Associated Press - Wednesday Jul 19, 2017
Suffolk County police have investigated 11 homicides since September, including the brutal killings of two teenage girls who were walking in their Brentwood neighborhood when they were attacked with machetes and baseball bats. The police department has arrested more than 160 suspected gang members in the county since September, including many on multiple occasions, as part of a crackdown on the violence. The arrests of three suspects in the park killings came to light earlier this week when a superseding indictment identified them and named a fourth unidentified suspect.According to a recent court filing obtained by Newsday, the four young men were lured to a park by two female associates of the MS-13 street gang, which was hunting for rivals and perceived enemies.
