  • New Oakland police chief among evacuees after massive fire
By Kimberly Veklerov - Monday Jul 10, 2017

Oakland’s new police chief confirmed Monday that she was among the more than 700 residents displaced early Friday by a fire that tore through a seven-story housing and retail project under construction.Chief Anne Kirkpatrick and her neighbors were evacuated in the predawn hours due to fears that a towering construction crane burned in the inferno might collapse and crash into an adjacent apartment complex, or that flames would spread to surrounding structures. The fire at the unfinished Alta Waverly mixed-use building at 23rd and Valdez streets happened within weeks of an arson attack that destroyed a similar construction project on the Oakland-Emeryville border.

  • No link yet between fires at Oakland, Emeryville construction sites
By Kurtis Alexander - Monday Jul 10, 2017

Investigators looking into a series of suspicious predawn fires at housing construction sites in Oakland and Emeryville, including a massive blaze last week north of downtown Oakland, have not found evidence linking any of the incidents, officials said Monday.A spokeswoman for the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives spoke as 22 agents from the bureau joined with local partners to probe the wreckage of Friday’s fire at 23rd and Valdez streets, where plans called for 196 market-rate apartments and 31,500 square feet of retail.ATF crews positioned two mobile work stations in a fenced-off parking lot next to the burn site, now a block-long pile of blackened boards and charred debris. The cause of the fire is not known, but investigators have determined that three previous fires over the past 13 months were intentionally set: one that tore through an unfinished 41-unit apartment building on Lester Avenue in Oakland and two that gutted the same housing and retail complex in Emeryville.Federal investigators released surveillance images of a suspect in a May 13 fire in Emeryville at the Intersection, a $35 million mixed-use project on San Pablo Avenue on the Oakland border.Though the investigation into last week’s fire is just beginning, some local leaders and developers are suggesting the blaze may be part of a broader arson plot, with some speculating that new construction is being targeted as a protest against gentrification.“There is a militant group of people who want to go back to the flawed policies of the past — it’s been proven that limiting the supply of new housing doesn’t bring down prices of housing,” said Michael Ghielmetti, president of Signature Development Group. The developer turned over surveillance video to authorities Friday, according to Singer, and had not heard back about the progress of the investigation.Wood Partners said 18 neighboring housing units were considered uninhabitable after the fire, and that the company, the city and the American Red Cross were working to help the residents.A $110,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the arsonist responsible for the fires in Emeryville and on Lester Avenue in Oakland.

  • Designer Profile: Conrad Asturi Studios, Inc.
    Monday Mar 13, 2017

The designers, owners of a boutique firm that’s a hybrid of their last names (Conrad Asturi Studios) share the mind-set that the biggest regrets stem from not taking a chance.“Failing means you’re trying,” said Sanchez, a designer with more than three decades of experience and a portfolio teeming with high-end construction. The team recently began a project in Malibu, a market both men were eager to enter. In this chat with SFisHomes, Sanchez and Asturi talk about their influences, their approach and how they avoid becoming complacent.Where’s your favorite place to design?A: (Sanchez) I love working in Pebble Beach, but there’s not a lot of competition with designers challenging each other out there.(Asturi) When we’re working in Malibu we’ll team up with firms that handle the local permits and nuances. There’s a restaurant renovation in the Camarillo Airport in Ventura County and we’re doing a project in Sonoma for a doctor. There’s also a restaurant in Ripon and a spot at a country club in Turlock.(Asturi) There’s also the project in Malibu, which is really exciting.Malibu’s weather really allows us to expand on the indoor-outdoor design concept. The family connection helped draw Conrad Sanchez to the design world, as did works by Luis Barragan, Ron Mann, Bernard Maybeck, Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies Van der Rohe.Father and son worked together on occasion, with impressive results.Sanchez’s contributions to hospitality design include a winery’s tasting room and an Aston Martin showroom.A student of modern design, Sanchez makes it a mission to keep his creations bright, warm and welcoming.A graduate of UC Berkeley’s architecture program, Asturi brings 15 years’ experience along with a passion for design. On top of providing designs, Asturi coordinates logistics with various professionals involved with completing a project.Like Sanchez, Asturi cherishes their opportunities in Pebble Beach and Wine Country, and the pair expect to build down in Malibu shortly.
