  • A heroine to make ‘Much Ado’ for
By Lily Janiak - Monday Jul 3, 2017

Usually, when we envision a heroine of one of Shakespeare’s romantic plays, she’s some shrinking violet, so demure and innocent that when she inevitably falls in love with the hero, she’s surprised to find she’s capable of a feeling that’s neither piety or loyalty to her family.Director Robert S. Currier transports the duel of wits between Beatrice and Benedick (Dameion Brown) to Pikeville, Ky., where, as the two both insist in vain that they’ll never marry anyone, Wright’s Beatrice sucks on cigars, hawks into spittoons and totes around a jug of hooch from which she takes copious slugs.Another is when she overhears his attempt to squeak out a love song; as he lays a musical egg, her horror is as if someone had cracked it over her head. When it comes time to take a principled stand, when her cousin Hero’s (Nicole Apostol Bruno) virtue is called into question as that young woman prepares to wed Claudio (Joshua Hollister), Beatrice, unlike everyone else, has no crisis of conscience. Many other members of Currier’s cast are only serviceable in their parts, with amateur line readings that fail to make the text sparkle. The outdoor Forest Meadows Amphitheatre exacerbates performers’ limited vocal ranges, its wide stage swallowing many lines.Entrances and exits drag, and many scenes dither instead of driving toward a rigorously honed comic kernel.Benedick’s and Beatrice’s respective attempts to eavesdrop on their friends create much opportunity for funny business with a bale of hay and a human-size basket.[...] original live music, composed by Billie Cox, finds felicitous affinity between Shakespeare and bluegrass.
