    A champion flicks the rope instead of yanking it, and there were no rope yankers in San Francisco’s Union Square on Thursday for the 54th annual cable car bell-ringing contest. Cobb, a 35-year Muni veteran, thrust the winner’s trophy over his head under the bright noon sun in the middle of Union Square where, moments before, he had belted out a two-minute tour de force of bright clangs, dampened dings, rousing rolls and fancy flicks. During his winning routine, he tossed the rope from gloved hand to hand, stuck out his tongue, whirled around and tried to get spectators to clap along, which some did. The competitors performed on a motorized cable car parked on the west side of Union Square before several hundred clapping and stomping spectators.

The No. 3 wireless carrier yesterday blew away analysts' estimates when it said it had gained 1.3 million total net additions in Q2,including 786,000 phone customers on a post-paid plan, with a record-low churn rate of 1.1%. Its $7.4 billion in service revenues, up 8%, is a record-high for the Bellevue, Wash.-based carrier,according to its release.
