  • In ‘Pop Aye,’ man and elephant journey across Thailand
    By G. Allen Johnson - Thursday Jul 13, 2017

There’s nothing like a long-lost pet to stir memories of childhood.[...] Thana takes it as a sign to abandon everything and lead the elephant back to his village — the rightful home for both, he reckons.Along the way, he is arrested by cops — among other things, his ownership papers turn out to be forged — sings karaoke with a transgender person, has meaningless sex with a hooker, and most memorably, has a complex and interesting encounter with a transient, Dee (Chaiwat Khumdee), who also has escaped to the comfort of his memories.Director Kirsten Tan, who is from Singapore and based in New York, must be admired for the audacity of casting an elephant as a co-star in her feature film debut.Alas, even Popeye (played by three elephants, but mostly a fellow named Bong) lacks personality, partially from being underused. The elephant is mostly in the background as Thana and his fellow humans work out their angst, but a moving scene right near the end shows Bong had some acting chops after all.G. Allen Johnson is a San Francisco Chronicle staff writer.
