ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Fifty years after actress Jayne Mansfield died in a Buick that slammed underneath a tractor-trailer, auto safety advocates say regulations inspired by that gruesome crash need updating to prevent hundreds of similar deaths annually."We're asking Congress to pass a bill that would mandate comprehensive underride protection, not only on tractor-trailers but on single-unit trucks," such as dump trucks, said Marianne Karth, who lost two teenage daughters, AnnaLeah and Mary, when her Crown Victoria crashed beneath a tractor-trailer in Georgia in 2013.After two cars skidded under a jackknifed milk tanker truck in northern New York on July 6, killing four people, U.S. Sen.

- Fix New York's government? Some say key is new constitution
By MARY ESCH, Associated Press - Sunday Aug 6, 2017
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Corruption and a rigged political system are battle cries of both sides in a debate over whether New Yorkers should vote this fall to rewrite the state constitution.Advocates of a "yes" vote say a constitutional convention is the only way to fix dysfunction, corruption and inefficiency in government and throw the bums out of Albany.Environmental groups fear a convention could open the door to delete or weaken protections for clean air and water, healthy forests and the 6-million-acre (2.4-million hectare) Adirondack Park. The real money involved in this is the labor unions that are trying to block a convention because they have great sway with this government and don't want it to change, said Gerald Benjamin, a political science professor and co-editor of a new book, New York's Broken Constitution:Right-to-Life and Planned Parenthood; the Conservative Party and left-leaning Working Families Party; LGBT Network and New York State Rifle and Pistol Association.Benjamin said a convention is the only way to fix problems with administration of elections, campaign finance, the structure of the court system and the Legislature, which he believes would be more effective with one house instead of two.

- Downsized GMC Acadia sparkles with new V6, safety gear
By Jeff Yip, Autos Correspondent - Thursday Jul 6, 2017
Though the sticker price of the chart-topping Denali all-wheel-drive version can easily exceed 50,000 once you throw in a couple of options and $925 destination, GMC offers no less than six other grades to suit practically any taste and budget. The All-Terrain setup is only available with AWD and has two rows of perforated leather seats in 2-3 configuration, since the area normally designated for the third-row seats is used for covered storage bins. All 2017 Acadias have active grille shutters, automatic climate control, keyless open and start, 7- or 8-inch touchscreen infotainment systems, tilt/telescopic leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, rear-vision camera with dynamic guidance, deep-tinted rear security glass, and one our favorite features, a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot with 3GB data allowance and three-month trial. If, however, a powered lift gate, remote starting, park assist, eight-way power seats, a three-prong 120-volt outlet (on the rear of the center console), or sunroof are on your new-car features list, you're looking at the upper grades like SLT-1, SLT-2 or Denali. The Acadia Denali is GMC's aspirational midsize SUV and you'll have to step up to the Denali, named for America's highest peak, if you must have powered tilt/telescoping and heated steering wheel. The most substantive rationale for going with the Denali is that it's the only version available with the $1,395 technology package, which ensures the driver will have today's cutting-edge safety features like surround vision, adaptive cruise control with full-speed automatic braking, forward collision alert, front pedestrian braking, lane change alert with blind-spot warning and the safety-alert driving seat that sends pulses to the quadrant of the seat bottom that corresponds to the position of the threat or obstruction.[...] direct-injected, the so-called LGX DOHC V6 is new to the Denali and has been updated in several areas, including a new crankshaft, oiling system and cylinder heads. If you're looking for maximum mileage, you'll want the front-wheel-drive 2.5-liter four, which features auto start/stop, scored an EPA-estimated rating of 21 mpg city and 26 highway. Not only is a non-turbocharged four-cylinder deemed capable of powering the SUV, the 2017 Acadia scores better V6 fuel economy, occupies less space in the garage, the turning diameter has been shaved by 1.7 feet to 38.7feet, and independent acceleration and slalom testing has shown the 2nd-generation Acadia is at the front of the pack in its class and price range.
- Lawmaker seeks probe after AP reveals maggots in NY facility
By DAVID KLEPPER, Associated Press - Saturday Aug 12, 2017
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A New York state lawmaker is demanding a federal investigation into New York state's care for the disabled following a recent Associated Press story that revealed the case of a man infested with maggots in a state-run group home.Democratic Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi, of Utica, told the AP on Saturday that he is asking the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to investigate the group home and other state-regulated facilities for the disabled where there have been allegations of abuse and neglect.A copy of the report was obtained by The Associated Press, which found that New York state is not alone in making it difficult for members of the public to access records about allegations of abuse and neglect in state-regulated facilities for the disabled.
