  • A record-smashing heat wave will scorch the southwestern U.S.
By Maria Gallucci - Sunday Jun 18, 2017

A brutal heat wave is expected to scorch the southwestern U.S. this week, with some cities likely to see all-time record high temperatures.

The National Weather Service (NWS) said this will likely be one of the most intense heat waves seen in many years across desert Southwest, including parts of California, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah.

High temperatures could climb well above 110 degrees each day for the next week across the area. Many desert locations, including Tucson and Phoenix, could reach the 120-degrees Fahrenheit mark on Tuesday or Wednesday, followed by a slow decline in temperatures in days to come. Read more...

  • Brutal Southwest U.S. heat wave sends temperature soaring to 125 degrees
By Andrew Freedman - Wednesday Jun 21, 2017

There is little that's normal about the heat wave roasting the Southwest U.S. during the past several days. In Phoenix and Palm Springs, temperatures were so high that 43 flights on American Eagle's regional jets were canceled on Tuesday afternoon because the heat exceeded aircraft operating limits.

So far, slightly lower temperatures are expected on Wednesday, and there were no heat-related delays or cancelations as of Wednesday morning, American Airlines said in an email.

The reason for the flight cancelations is that the heat plus the relatively high altitudes in the Southwest caused the air to be so thin that it was impossible for small jets' wings to generate enough lift to become safely airborne. Since Sunday, more than 100 flights were canceled due to the heat, according to American Airlines and news reports. Read more...

  • All the best memes and jokes from the Warriors' NBA Finals win
By Sam Laird - Tuesday Jun 13, 2017

This time they didn't blow the 3-1 lead. Golden State beat Cleveland to clinch the NBA championship in Oakland on Monday night, in doing so avenging last year's epic collapse that spawned a million memes

That makes two titles in three years, with an NBA regular-season record for wins sandwiched in between — so Warriors fans are now officially cleared to talk dynasty.

Kevin Durant was brilliant with 39 points for Golden State, but Monday's NBA Finals finale didn't disappoint on the comedy front either.

During the second quarter, Warriors forward David West and Cavaliers forward Tristan Thompson got heated — and veeery close to one another, which led to this slapstick screen-grab.  Read more...

  • Kevin Durant silences the haters in killer Nike ad
By Keith Wagstaff - Tuesday Jun 13, 2017

Nike was prepared for the Golden State Warriors and Kevin Durant to win the NBA Finals.

Right after the Dubs beat the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 5 to become NBA champions on Monday night, this Nike ad dropped on ABC — and it's pretty great.

Durant got a ton of flak for leaving the Oklahoma City Thunder and moving to the Bay Area (much like LeBron James did when he joined the Miami Heat in 2010).

Now, Durant is the NBA Finals MVP, and he looks pretty damn smart for joining Steph Curry and Klay Thompson on the West Coast.  Read more...
