  • AXIS gets site-specific for anniversary show
By Allan Ulrich - Sunday Jul 2, 2017

The occasion? AXIS’ 30th anniversary and the retirement after 20 productive years of founding artistic director Judith Smith.Saturday, 20 performers were listed in the program; the difference between AXIS company dancers, core company dancers and ensemble dancers eluded me; only in two of the six sections did most of them actually perform.Arranged into six sections, the piece was inspired by the topography of Yerba Buena Gardens, and, in truth, Koplowitz drew my attention to sections of the site that I had thought I was familiar with, especially the rock garden of the second section and the leafy bower in the following episode.[...] somehow, all the performers melted into a procession on the winding terrazzo path, all of it suggesting a religious pilgrimage or a jaunt to the emerald city.Since the audience and the sound system required relocation five times during the 75-minute presentation, tension-building was at a minimum and sightlines in the seating areas were very chancy.
