  • Newly discovered WWII photos reveal a striking record of life on a Navy ship

Shortly after the entry of the United States into World War II, the Navy established the Naval Aviation Photographic Unit to create images for pilot recruitment campaigns.

The Navy was competing with the Army Air Corps for a limited pool of skilled airmen, and needed top-rate images to give them an edge in attracting talent.

They asked Edward Steichen, one of the most renowned and well-paid photographers in the world, to assemble a team.

Steichen recruited a handful of men, like Wayne Miller and Horace Bristol, who would go on to become famous in their own right. Read more...

  • 3 things we learned at E3 about 'Ni No Kuni II,' the gorgeous Studio Ghibli-like game
By Tina Amini - Thursday Jun 15, 2017

The absolutely gorgeous game developed by Level-5 in association with Studio Ghibli, Ni No Kuni, is getting a sequel, and it’s coming with some changes. But not everyone is super into the idea of them yet.

On the E3 showfloor this week, I played a slice of Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom. The demo mostly consisted of two big boss battles: one, a fire-breathing dragon; and the other, a fist-pounding guerrilla creature. Playing as Evan, a young adult and overthrown king of Ding Dong Dell, I thrust my sword at the claws and furry butt of my boss enemies. I dodged and rolled away from their attacks, and used my special water or fire-based hits when I could.  Read more...

  • 'Star Wars Battlefront II' multiplayer looks glorious
By Kellen Beck - Saturday Jun 10, 2017

Star Wars Battlefront II spent a long time in the limelight during EA's E3 press conference today, showing off intense multiplayer battles on the planet Naboo and teasing a new single player story mode.

Battlefront II will feature battles that span the entire series including the battle of Naboo from The Phantom Menace featuring Darth Maul and a fight between Rey and Kylo Ren from The Force Awakens. The battle of Naboo includes multiple phases between the clones and separatists.

You can see all the action here (the Star Wars stuff starts about 1 hour and 15 minutes in): Read more...

  • We played 15 minutes of the new 'Star Wars Battlefront II' story
By Adam Rosenberg - Sunday Jun 11, 2017

What is Operation Cinder and how is it meant to squash those filthy Rebels?

Star Wars: Battlefront II brings back the fantasy, wish-fulfilling online action that the 2015 game nailed so well, but it also fixes a major drawback of that earlier game: the lack of a story mode.

The original Battlefront went without a Star Wars tale, because "very few people actually play the single-player on these types of games," EA courageously foolishly said at the time. This sequel fixes that error. More importantly, it puts you in the combat boots of an elite Imperial soldier, Iden Versio. Read more...

  • Trolls are posting photos of fake missing people from London tower fire
By Gianluca Mezzofiore - Wednesday Jun 14, 2017

As a massive blaze engulfed a London high-rise overnight, the usual trolls began spamming social media with photos of fake missing people, in a similar fashion to what happened in the aftermath of the Manchester terror attack

This time, Mexican trolls were particularly active in targeting the freelance journalist Andrea Noel, who was previously harassed online after sharing a video of a man assaulting her on the street.

The Twitter user @Sir_Thomaas posted a picture of Noel claiming she was missing:

Noel was also wrongly included in a collage of missing people after the Manchester attack, which went viral and even featured in some media reports: Read more...

  • Baby elephant rescued from drowning in brave act of team elephant heroism
By Mia Johnson - Tuesday Jun 20, 2017

Here's a moment you rarely see in real life: Two animals working in tandem to rescue another like it's the climax of a Disney movie.

At the Grand Park Zoo in Seoul, South Korea, two elephants were seen on CCTV rushing to rescue a baby elephant who'd fallen into a pool. In the video, the little elephant was standing near the water's edge when it lost balance and fell into the pool.

With a little bit of teamwork, the elephants pushed the baby out of the water until it was safe.

Happily, zoo officials said that none of the elephants were hurt in the rescue, according to ABC News. Read more...
