- A’s Yonder Alonso thrilled to come home as All-Star
By John Shea - Monday Jul 10, 2017
A’s Yonder Alonso thrilled to come home as All-StarTattoo or no tattoo, Alonso will have no trouble remembering this dream come true in his adopted hometown, the chance to represent not only the A’s but also Miami, his family and the Cuban community that supported him from childhood.Alonso is the American League’s backup first baseman for Tuesday’s All-Star Game at Marlins Park.“I told my wife I didn’t want to sleep in today,” said Alonso, who arrived early in the morning from Seattle, where the A’s finished the first half. The All-Star teams took turns in media availability sessions Monday, and when AL players lined up along the outfield warning track, Alonso sat at a table with his beaming father, Luis, a few steps away. The Alonsos — the parents, Yonder and his little sister — flew in a tiny plane in the middle of the night in 1995 from Havana to Miami, where they all contributed to survive in their new home.Monday’s most touching moment for Alonso came when he and teammates bused from the team hotel to the ballpark with their families. From Coral Gables High School, he earned a scholarship to Miami and was selected by the Reds in the first round of the 2008 draft.Baltimore third baseman Manny Machado, who married Alonso’s sister, Yainee, is a three-time All-Star but wasn’t selected this year.Aside from the emotion of returning to Miami as an All-Star, Alonso has the memory of Jose Fernandez in his heart. The Marlins’ celebrated pitcher died 10 months ago in a boating accident and most certainly would have been showcased in Miami this week.Alonso can be a free agent after the season and is on record saying he’d like to remain in Oakland, but Miami always will be home.John Shea is The San Francisco Chronicle’s national baseball writer.First base
