Outdoor magazines always amaze me. Yes, nature is lovely to look at -- but what do you think the Discovery Channel is for? First, it's the safest way to travel. Camping is a euphemism for no toiletpaper -- or worse. Stephen Colbert isn't the only one terrified of bears. But for those humbled by its wonders, such as conservationist and Sierra Club founder John Muir, the wilderness istranscendent. "Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees." That's Muir; unlike me, he didn't dive into the nearest GreenwichVillage café when temps dropped below 60. And unlike the lost hikers cited on this month's cover of Adirondack Life, he always found his way home.

Buyer up! A bat used — and abused — by Yankees legend Mickey Mantle in 1958 is up for sale in an auction that ends on Monday. The 35-inch long, 33.2-ounce Adirondack 302 model bat — with “Mickey Mantle” lettered into the barrel — last sold for $17,400 in 2006, but could fetch $50,000 this...

By Dean Balsamini - Saturday Jul 15, 2017
Baseball legend Mickey Mantle’s illegal bat, confiscated by an umpire during the 1958 season, was purchased at auction by three Texas business partners for $40,000. It’s believed that Mantle doctored the 35-inch long, 33.2-ounce Adirondack 302 model with the tip of a nail or a sharp tool to create a “ waffle-iron effect,” which would...
