A rapidly spreading fire in the Grizzly Peak area in Alameda County had about 70 firefighters battling Wednesday afternoon to bring flames under control, officials said.The extent of the fire that broke out in the Oakland hills, which occasionally are prone to fires that spread quickly because of dry vegetation, was not immediately clear.Deemed as a fast spreading vegetation fire, the blaze was reported just after 1 p.m. off of Fish Ranch Road and Grizzly Peak, at the intersection of Orinda, Oakland and Berkeley, officials said.A number of other agencies — comprising about 70 firefighters and additional wildfire equipment— from Berkeley, Alameda County and Cal Fire were responding to the blaze, said Battalion Chief Melinda Drayton of the Oakland Fire Department.Several roads east of the UC Berkeley campus were closed as emergency responders rushed to the fire, officials there said.

Northern Californian Alexander Rossi overcame a mechanical malfunction on pit road to notch a big victory. IndyCar points leader Josef Newgarden wasn’t so lucky. Rossi, of Nevada City (Nevada County), used a stroke of good fortune to win the IndyCar Grand Prix at The Glen on Sunday from the pole, leading just over half of the 60-lap race and easily holding off four-time series champion Scott Dixon over the closing laps at Watkins Glen (N.Y.)
