- Kagawa-Ya udon shop plots early April opening in Mid-Market
By Justin Phillips - Wednesday Mar 8, 2017
Kagawa-Ya, the udon shop from chef Sean Lim (Kyo-Ya) and his wife Katherine Chiao, is set to open early next month in Mid-Market.
Think udon and rice bowls with hot or cold broth, optional toppings of vegetable kakiage, korokke (deep fried potato cakes coated with panko), aburaage (sweet soy bean curd), or just a simple soft boiled egg.
The 2,400-square-foot setup has a quick-service format with a simple main menu section of hot udon ($8), cold udon ($10), udon with braised beef ($13), beef curry udon ($12), and creamy kabocha udon ($10).
On the rice bowl side, theres a beef curry dish ($13) and a mushroom curry version ($12).

The 40-seat space was designed by Steve MacMillan of SLM Architecture, the same name behind Pican in Oakland and the Triple Voodoo Brewery & Tap Room in San Francisco
San Francisco isn’t unaccustomed to seeing udon concepts pop up and it seems like the Kagawa-Ya team kept this in mind with their new porject. In an effort to stand out from the pack, Chef Lim and his wife Katherine trained for a few weeks in Kagawa prefecture in the Shikoku region of Japan. (The area has more than 600 udon shops. And apparently the region’s residents consume seven times more udon than the rest of the country, according to the Kagawa-Ya team.)
Kagawa-Ya Udon Noodle Co.: 1455 Market Street, between 10th and 11th Streets; Hours will be Monday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m; www.kagawayaudon.com
